How to Get Urine Out of a Memory Foam Mattress

Memory foam and urine are a particularly bad combination. If you have ever watched liquid soak into memory foam, you already know why. It disappears into the foam almost instantly and goes deep fast. By the time you have found the accident and grabbed some towels, the urine has already travelled further into the mattress than you would like. Getting urine out of a memory foam mattress is absolutely possible,e but it requires a different approach than cleaning a regular mattress. Use too much liquid,d and you can permanently damage the foam. Move too slow, ly, and the smell gets worse every day.

Here is exactly what to do.

Why Memory Foam Is Different

Standard innerspring or hybrid mattresses allow some air flow. Liquid can be blotted up,p and the mattress dries reasonably quickly with a fan and some patience.

Memory foam is dense and has almost no airflow internally. When liquid soaks in, it gets trapped. It dries very slowly. And because of that, it holds onto odour much longer than other mattress types. The good news is that the cleaning method is not complicated. The challenge is just using the right amount of product and being patient with the drying process.

Act the Moment You Find It

Speed matters even more with memory foam than with other mattresses. The faster you act, the less deeply the urine soaks. So the moment you find the accident, everything else can wait.

Grab clean towels and press them firmly onto the wet area. Hold them down. Do not rub. Press, absorb, replace with fresh towels and press again. Keep going until you cannot pull any more moisture out. With memory foam, this blotting stage is even more critical than usual because the less liquid remains in the foam, the less damage you risk and the easier the cleaning becomes.

The Cleaning Solution: Less Is More

This is where memory foam cleaning differs most from regular mattress cleaning. You do not want to soak it. On a regular mattress,s you can be generous with your spray. On memory foam, you need to be careful.

Mix equal parts cold water and white vinegar with a small squeeze of laundry detergent. Put it in a spray bottle. Spray the affected area until lightly damp. Not saturated. Lightly dampen. Then blot. Apply a little more and blot again. Work in stages rather than soaking it all at once.

The goal is to get the cleaning solution to the depth the urine reached without flooding the foam with excess liquid that will sit in there for days and potentially cause mould.

Baking Soda Is Your Best Friend Here

Once you have done your cleaning and blotted out as much moisture as possible, baking soda is what finishes the job. Pour a generous, thick layer over the entire treated area. Leave it for at least 8 hours. For memory foam with a urine smell, 24 hours is better. The baking soda draws out residual moisture and neutralizes the odour compounds at the same time.

Vacuum it all up thoroughly and check the result. If any smell remains, apply a pet enzyme cleaner sparingly over the smelly area, let it air-dry completely on its own, and follow with another round of baking soda left overnight.

The Drying Problem and How to Solve It

This is the part most people underestimate. Memory foam takes a very long time to dry. Even after you have finished cleaning and vacuumed up the baking soda, the foam inside the mattress may still contain moisture for another day or two.

Do not put sheets back on until the mattress is completely dry. Press your palm firmly against the treated area and hold it there for several seconds. If you feel any coolness or dampness at all, it is not ready. Give it more time.

To speed drying up, point one or two fans directly at the treated area. Open windows for airflow. If the weather is dry and warm, stand the mattress upright or prop it against a wall so air can circulate through it more freely. Exposing the mattress to direct sunlight is the fastest natural drying method available, and it has the added benefit of UV rays helping break down any remaining odour compounds.

Allow at least 24 hours of drying time after cleaning. For a large accident, 48 hours is safer. Putting sheets on too early traps moisture in the foam, and you will end up with a smell worse than when you started.

For Old Dried Urine in Memory Foam

Found a stain that has already dried? The process is the same, but with one extra step. Lightly mist the dried stain with cold water to begin rehydrating the dried uric acid crystals before applying your cleaning solution. Give it a couple of minutes after misting before spraying the vinegar solution.

For old dried stains in memory foam, an enzyme cleaner applied sparingly is more effective than the vinegar approach alone. Apply it carefully, leave it on for 30 minutes, gently blot up the excess, then go straight to the baking soda overnight treatment.

Old stains often need two rounds to be fully gone. Be patient and allow generous drying time between each round.

One Thing That Prevents All of This

A waterproof mattress protector specifically designed for memory foam. They are thin enough not to affect the feel of the mattress, completely waterproof, and machine washable. If you own a memory foam mattress and you have children or pets, this is not optional. One accident on an unprotected memory foam mattress is an experience that convinces most people immediately.

According to the NHS, bedwetting affects a significant number of children and can continue into the teenage years for some. For families in this situation, a waterproof protector is genuinely one of the most practical investments you can make for a memory foam mattress.

// FAQs

Urine can damage memory foam if left untreated for a long time, breaking down foam cells and reducing support. It may also lead to mould growth. Prompt cleaning and thorough drying usually prevent permanent damage.

The smell remains because uric acid crystals are still trapped deep inside the foam. Use an enzyme cleaner sparingly, let it air dry completely, then apply baking soda for 24 hours. Repeat if necessary, and use sunlight to help eliminate lingering odours.

Drying takes at least 24 hours and can take longer depending on moisture levels and humidity. Use fans, open windows, or sunlight to speed up drying. Ensure the mattress is completely dry before using it again.
