How to Clean Dog Pee From a Mattress
It is 7 am. You wake up to find the dog has had an accident on the bed. You are tired and frustrated, and have no idea where to start. We get it. But here is the thing. How you handle the next 20 minutes makes the difference between a mattress that smells fresh tomorrow and one that still reeks next week. First Things First: Stop and Blot
Before you grab any cleaning product, grab towels. Thick ones. As many as you can find.

The Cleaning Solution You Already Have at Home
You do not need to rush out and buy anything special for a fresh dog pee accident. Mix one cup of cold water, one cup of white vinegar, and a tablespoon of laundry detergent in a spray bottle. That is it.
Spray it generously over the whole affected area. Do not be shy with it. You need the solution to penetrate deeply, as the urine goes, not just sit on the surface. Leave it for 15 minutes and let it do its job.
After 15 minutes, blot it up with a fresh, dry towel, using the same method as before. Press firmly, do not rub.
Baking Soda Is Not Optional
This is the step people skip and then wonder why the smell comes back. After blotting up your cleaning solution, pour a thick, generous layer of baking soda over the entire treated area. And when we say generous,s we mean it. A thin dusting is useless. You want a proper thick white covering.
Leave it overnight, at least 8 hours. The baking soda draws out any remaining moisture and neutralizes odor compounds at the same time. Vacuum it all up in the morning.
At this point, most fresh dog-pee accidents are completely sorted. Do a proper sniff test before you put sheets back on. Get your face right down to the mattress and check the whole area. If it smells clean, you are done.
If the Smell Is Still There
Right. The smell is still there. This means the uric acid crystals that cause the odor have soaked deeper than the vinegar solution reached. Do not panic. This is fixable. You need an enzyme cleaner.
Enzyme cleaners are not just another cleaning product. They contain enzymes that break apart uric acid crystals in dog urine at the molecular level. The smell compounds are not masked or absorbed from the surface. They are destroyed. Completely.
Spray the enzyme cleaner generously over the smelly area. Leave it to air dry completely on its own. Do not rinse it. Do not blot it up early. Let it dry naturally because it keeps working as it dries. Once fully dry, check for smell again. One good application of enzyme cleaner almost always finishes off a smell that baking soda and vinegar alone could not shift.
What About Dried Dog Pee
If you found the accident after it had already dried, the process is the same, but you need to take one extra step at the start. Lightly mist the dried stain with cold water before doing anything else, but don't soak it. Just a gentle spray to start rehydrating those hardened uric acid crystals so the cleaning solution can get into them properly. Give it two or three minutes, and then carry on with the vinegar solution and baking soda as normal.

Sunlight Does More Than You Think
After any treatment, if you can, move your mattress near a window that gets direct sunlight, or outside entirely. Sunlight naturally breaks down organic compounds through radiation. It is completely free and makes a real difference in how fresh the mattress smells after cleaning. Even a couple of hours in direct sun after treatment is worth doing.

A waterproof mattress protector. It is genuinely that simple. It sits between your mattress and your sheets, prevents any liquid from ever reaching the mattress, and is completely machine washable. If your dog sleeps on the bed or near it, this is not optional. Future accidents become a two-minute job of pulling off the protector and washing it. The mattress underneath stays completely untouched.
